Mary & Martha
The “first wives” who jumped into the river…
My friend W is in the river, too, swimming against the current. K jumps in to swim with W. I am nearby watching. W puts the video of them on instagram and gets a lot of likes.
A school behind me is wondering about the dead people I see here. I talk about Mary & Martha, the first wives who are playing by the river with two other boys, who might be their brothers, or sons, but I don’t know? The principal wanted me to dive in and talk all about them but my rebuttal was that I had just met them, and didn’t know much about them yet, but that they were dressed in old clothing, likely from the 1800s.
“Polygamist Mormons, would be my guess?” I told him.
They’re playing and laughing next to the river, having a lot of fun.
As I was waking from sleep I heard the two young girls yell, “Bri, our names are?!” and I said, “Mary & Martha,” as I opened my eyes.
